Mijn eerste fles van North Star Spirits en ik snap nu al waarom mensen ze scherp in de gaten houden. En ja\u2026 ik ben een sucker voor een goed vintage label. Deze ziet eruit alsof hij thuishoort in een oude reiskoffer, niet op een moderne plank. Zet daar een sneeuwachtige dram buiten bij en ik ben verkocht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
North Star Spirits is een onafhankelijke bottelaar uit Glasgow, opgericht in 2016 door Iain Croucher. Ze distilleren niet zelf, ze jagen op karakter: uitgesproken vaten en kleine batches die ze bottelen om te laten zien wat Scotch kan zijn wanneer het persoonlijkheid mag hebben, niet alleen perfectie. Deze heet The Highland Connection en het is echt zo\u2019n \u201ctwee werelden, \u00e9\u00e9n glas\u201d moment: Ardnamurchan Peated Butt ontmoet Highland Park Refill. Gebotteld op een heerlijk drinkbare 50% ABV. Geen peat-bom. Meer een haardvuur dat precies weet wanneer het moet knetteren en wanneer het rustig mag gloeien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eerst zoet, daarna zoete rook. Veel rood fruit, met die frisse groene spanning: zure appel, cranberry, rode bes. Ook iets licht groens, knapperig en friszuur, alsof je net een verse stengel in de tuin hebt afgeknakt, maar dan op een goede manier.
Smaak<\/strong>:
Karamel en een flinke golf rood fruit. Daarna iets frissers, bijna gemberachtig, gevolgd door pure chocolade. Verwarmend, mooi in balans en eerlijk gezegd\u2026 gevaarlijk doordrinkbaar op 50%.
Finish<\/strong>:
Medium tot lang. Peperig en kruidig, met een koele muntachtige lift die langzaam wegebt. De rook blijft hangen, maar zacht. Meer gloed dan klap. Daarna droog rood fruit en eiken om af te sluiten.
En dit is het leuke: het label zegt 6 jaar, maar deze whisky gedraagt zich niet als zes. Hij voelt ouder. Meer lagen. Meer \u201cvolwassen gesprek\u201d. Eerlijk? Dit is gewoon een heerlijke dram. En ik heb het gevoel dat hij alleen maar beter wordt als hij even open mag staan. Zo\u2019n leuke combinatie van distilleerderijen ook.
