Gisterenavond had ik zo\u2019n \u201cis dit echt?\u201d moment in het glas. Een Benriach van 27 jaar oud, gebotteld op een belachelijke 61,2% ABV door de Londense onafhankelijke bottelaar One8Nine.
\u201cFirst Light \u2013 Chapter One\u201d: gedistilleerd op 21 januari 1997, 27 jaar gerijpt op \u00e9\u00e9n hogshead (vat 7350) en in 2024 gebotteld. Slechts 189 flessen \u2013 een mini-zonsopgang boven Speyside, gevangen in glas. Je voelt de leeftijd meteen, maar nergens wordt het vermoeid of te houtig. Het balanceert precies op die lijn tussen elegante oude Speyside en full-on dessertmodus.
In de neus is dit pure comfort whisky: geroosterde pinda\u2019s, karamel, romige zoetheid en kleverige dadeljam, omwikkeld door een fudge-achtige laag die je blijft terugtrekken naar het glas. Zo\u2019n neus waar je rustig tien minuten alleen al aan kunt snuffelen. Op de tong gaat hij vol in tarte-tatin-stand. Denk aan appeltaart met een dikke korst bruine suiker, donkere chocolade, limoenrasp, gekonfijte peren, zoethout, krentjes en zelfs een plak geroosterd walnotenbrood. Grote, gedurfde Speyside single malt, maar dan w\u00e9l met elegantie en balans. Niks log, niks vermoeid \u2013 gewoon heel veel smaak in een mooie flow. De finish rolt maar door: warme vruchtencake, chocolade en kruidig eikenhout die langzaam overgaan in witte peper, gember en wat drogere houttonen.
Echt zo\u2019n \u201cach, nog \u00e9\u00e9n klein slokje dan\u201d-finish, waarbij je hand al naar het glas grijpt voordat je brein kan zeggen: \u201crustig aan, het is 61,2%\u2026\u201d En dan komt het leukste deel: een paar druppels water en hij schakelt van versnelling. Alles wordt zachter, ronder, speelser. Meer zoete vruchten, meer romigheid, nieuwe laagjes kruiden \u2013 alsof er drie verschillende whisky\u2019s in \u00e9\u00e9n fles zitten en je ze \u00e9\u00e9n voor \u00e9\u00e9n aan het unlocken bent.
Dit is precies waarom cask strength whisky zo verslavend is als je graag speelt met water, proefnotities en mini-veranderingen in je dram. Dit is pas mijn tweede whisky van One8Nine en allebei zijn ze bizar goed. Echte \u201cindependent bottler danger zone\u201d: voor je het weet ben je verdiept in obscure casknummers en wil je ze allemaal proberen.
Een Benriach van 27 jaar had ik nog niet eerder in het glas en het is meteen een voltreffer: rijk, nootachtig, fruitig, kruidig en chocolade-achtig Speyside-karakter op natuurlijke vatsterkte, gelimiteerde oplage en een fles die z\u2019n plek in een serieuze whiskycollectie dubbel en dwars verdient. Perfect voor whisky lovers, whisky geeks en iedereen die leeft voor memorabele drams en van die veel te late proefsessies waar \u00e9\u00e9n glas er toch altijd twee worden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
